A new online news site will keep communities informed of crime in their local neighbourhood and policing issues impacting their lives, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Simon Overland recently announced.
He said he hoped the regular release of crime statistics will make communities aware of what is happening in their local area so they can take preventative measures.
“We know that a majority of people access the internet both at home and at work. Education is very important. If community members can see and learn what types of crimes are being committed in their backyard, they can work with police in preventing these crimes,” Mr Overland said.

The original Neighbourhood Watch Strategic Plan 2008-2013 was revised by Board members and others at the Strategic Planning & Priorities Session held on Saturday 9th May 2009. The revisions have been finalised and are available below.
The main changes relate to:
• acknowledgement of the existence of Australasian Neighbourhood Watch (ANHW) and the intention to work in conjunction with and in support of ANHW
• inclusion of “community Safety” in several paragraphs; and
• inclusion of “community engagement” in several paragraphs (reflecting both the objective of AHNW and the fact that Victoria Police command has tasked the Victoria Police Safer Community Unit with responsibility in their area – and the fact that members of the Neighbourhood Watch network already engage with the community in area of community support, community strengthening and community renewal.

BACKGROUND:
Chloe Jones and Senior Sergeant Mark Standish discussed how an agreed monthly theme for Neighbourhood Watch would aid NHW and Victoria Police, Media & Corporate Communications Dept to work closely together to achieve shared goals.
A review of the monthly themes was conducted in-line with the current calendar of events for Victoria Police, Australian and State Government. By aligning ourselves with these events NHW can hope to increase opportunities to tie in with events/media opportunities that are already in place.
A move to monthly themes would also ensure that each NHW group would be seen to be focussing on the same crime/issue and that in turn would strengthen NHW across the state.
By consistently repeating messages through current NHW media opportunities and in-line with the Victorian state governments focus, we can raise the profile of NHW to show how they proactively address crime within the community.
A revision of the monthly themes will also ensure that current and emerging crimes are addressed, which will attract the next generation of NHW volunteers, in-line with opportunities to re-launch.
Careful consideration has been given to each theme which is detailed below.
